Has Modric ended the Messi/Ronaldo Dominance

It is no news to every football fans that 2 names have dominated world football since 2008 with either of the 2 winning the individual awards for the past 10 years.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will go down in history as one of the longest rivalries in football history but history will have to wait because it is not sure they are done.

These 2 players have 10 Ballon d’Or which is the most prestigious award in football between them.

They have been the highest goal scorer in the most prestigious competition in the world, the UEFA Champions League since the 2007/08 season. They were joint high goal scorer with Neymar in 2014/15 season.

Messi and Ronaldo have dominated this competition to the extent that they have both won it 9 times. Ronaldo, 5,  is the player with the most UCL trophies in this era, with Messi closely following him with 4.

This was Luka Modric year after a great performance with Real Madrid in their 3rd consecutive UCL win and a spectacular display at the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia which his home country, Croatia was a finalist.

Modric completed the individual trophies win this year after adding the Ballon d’Or to his name beating Ronaldo, Griezmann, Mbappe, and Messi. With this he has officially broken the long duopoly of Messi and Ronaldo this year, breaking the 10 years long dominance but will this be the end of the Messi/Ronaldo dominance?

Using this season statistics, it is more likely that Messi and Ronaldo are not yet done with their dominance as none of the 2 players is relenting in their pursuit of greatness.

Their teams, Barcelona and Juventus are also the leader of the standings in their respective leagues and are also top contenders for the Champions League trophy this season.

It is a fact that no player is close to this 2 so far this season and if they can keep their current form and stay away from injuries they will be top contenders for the individual awards again next year.
