Why is APC playing Ethic Card and Divisive Politics?

APC Crisis: Party expels Chief Onyemauche Nnamani in Enugu State over alleged Misconduct

The ruling party, All Progressive party in their bid to seek re-election in the forthcoming election have already started to play their cards.

One thing that has been very loud in the APC re-election campaign is the tone of tribalism. In what seems to be a strategy by the ruling party they want the 2019 presidential election to be more tribe-oriented than achievement-oriented.

The Minister of Labor, Chris Ngige was the first to make tribalistic sentiments concerning the election. A few months ago Ngige who is from the eastern part of Nigeria advised people from his region to vote for President Buhari in 2019 so that they can be given the presidential ticket in 2023.

Not long after Ngige advised the Igbos, Minister of Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola who is from the western part of Nigeria also advised the Yorubas to vote for Buhari’s reelection in order for them to get the presidential ticket in 2023.

The Secretary-General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha a few weeks ago also urged the Igbos to vote for Buhari in 2019 in order to get the presidency in 2023.

Recently, the Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo also joined the rhetoric when he advised the Yoruba to vote for himself and his boss’ re-election come 2019 so that they can get the presidential ticket in 2023.

This is obviously a strategy by APC to retain power and it would have worked wonders if not for the contradictions in the conditions from prominent members of the party. The presidential ticket can only go to one zone in 2023 and it can either be given to the east or west.

This strategy is to divide and conquer in the South while they play the ethnic card in the North. The governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai who is a prominent member of APC has accused the Vice Presidential candidate of the main opposition party, PDP, Peter Obi of been a tribal bigot who was against Northerners when he was governor of Anambra state.

According to the zoning of power in Nigeria by some prominent political parties, the 2023 presidency is zoned to the Southern region and even though it is not certain this zoning structure will still be effective by then but it is a good way to win more votes from this region.

It is quite pathetic that the party the people trusted to take the nation forward 3 and a half year ago are trying to play a divisive card like this in a crucial moment in the nation’s history. There are several issues that should matter in the preparation for the 2019 presidential election some of them are Security, Education, Infrastructure, the dilapidated state of the economy and so much more.

While this might seem like a good strategy to win re-election by the ruling party it is not a good path to trend in a country like Nigeria.
