Former Nigerian President, Shehu Shagari Passes on

First Nigerian executive president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari passes on after a brief illness in a national hospital in Abuja, Nigeria.

According to his son who broke the news, the elder statesman died at the age of 93 on the 28th of December, 2018.

Shagari was the first and only president in the second republic which was between 1st of October 1979 to 31st of December 1983. He had won re-election before his administration was ousted by a coup executed by General Muhammadu Buhari on the 31st of December, 1983. The election that Shagari won in his bid for a second term was marred by massive rigging to favor the incumbent according to observers of the election.

Shagari was a House of Representative member, he was also a minister that held different portfolios during his time in active politics before becoming the president of Nigeria.

Since his administration was overthrown in 1983 Shagari has remained an elder statesman who has worked for the unity and prosperity of Nigeria until his death.
