Nigerian Mental Health Patient jumps to his death in London
A 32-year-old Nigerian mental health patient, identified as, Osazuwa Otote has jumped to his death in Canary Wharf, London.
Mr Otote, originally from Benin, Nigerian, broke free from his carer and jumped, landing backwards with his head towards the Tube doors, Poplar Coroner’s Court heard today.
Paramedics tried to revive Mr Otote, who was known as Phillip, but he was declared dead at the scene from head and throat injuries.
The 32-year-old had been living in the Cygnet Health Care high dependency mental health unit in Lewisham, south London.
Poplar Coroner Mary Hassell adjourned the inquest until July for further investigation.
A second man, believed to be in his fifties, fell to his death less than 24 hours later in the Canary Wharf shopping centre, which is just a few minutes walk from where Mr Otote died.
Jordan Bruin, a manager at a nearby clothing shop, described hearing “the loudest bang and a lot of screaming” at 8:40am on Tuesday.
London Air Ambulance were scrambled to the scene but were unable to save the man.
