Former Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole scored his first ever goal in the FA Cup but it was not enough for Championship side Derby County as they were beaten 2-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion in the fifth round on Saturday.

Substitute Cole, who had not scored in English football since 2012, struck late on after Premier League Brighton had moved into a two-goal lead thanks to first-half goals by Anthony Knockaert and Juergen Locadia.

After the game, Frank Lampard described Ashley Cole as a “machine” and said they will need the defender for their Championship promotion push. He said;

“He has been working hard. He wasn’t quite ready for 90 minutes today but that’s a great exercise he has given 45 minutes. I thought he was calm and assured on the ball. He has all the experience from his career and got his goal. It’s really good for us and we will need him.”
