9th National Assembly: Omo-Agege defeats Ekweremadu to emerge Deputy Senate President

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has defeated Ike Ekweremadu to emerge the deputy senate president of the 9th Senate. He deputizes Ahmad Lawan who earlier today emerge Senate President.

Omo-Agege defeated Ekweremadu who was the former deputy senate president in the 8th Senate. The nomination of Ekweremadu who represents Enugu West came as surprise. He, however, vowed to work with the new Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

He emerged winner after the counting of the ballot by the clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori. He got 67 votes to defeat Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes.

Meanwhile, Senator Ahmad Lawan emerged the new Senate President to lead the 9th Senate Senate. This was after an election that saw him defeat his rival Ali Ndume.
Ahmad Lawan got 79 votes while Ali Ndume got 28.

The voting took place today at the National Assembly with all stakeholders gathered.
Ahmad Lawan emerged the new Senate President despite the endorsement of Ali Ndume from the opposition party the PDP.
