Kenya’s 2019 census which kicked off on August 24, had a sad twist for a family in the country as they got robbed by policemen in the night.

Wanjiru Kariuki, a businesswoman and resident of Nairobi’s Joska Estate accused the policemen of breaking into her home and stealing her appliances. According to her, she thought the security operatives were census officials but changed her mind after they started knocking on her door violently.

I refused to open the door after they started knocking the door violently, including using doors. They eventually managed to break down the metallic door,” she narrated.

One of the lady’s barmaids also recounted getting slapped by the policemen.

The first thing they did was to slap me, asking me why I had refused to open the door for them,” Wanjiru’s barmaid Mercy Silantoi recalled.

One of the policemen was captured in a CCTV footage stealing a phone that was charging at the bar counter during the raid which Wanjiru said was meant to serve as her punishment for refusing to pay “protection fees” that is demanded by local security officers for purposes of extortion.
