Man arraigned in court for beating his daughter to death in Lagos

A Nigerian dad, Patrick Akpan, has been arraigned in court for allegedly beating his three-year-old daughter to death on December 27th, 2020.

It was gathered that Akpan beat up his daughter to a pulp with a belt for messing up his house and died in her mother’s arms while being taken to the hospital.

He was arraigned before the Lagos Magistrate court in Yaba after he was charged before the court for manslaughter.

The prosecution counsel, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that Akpan committed the offence in Jakande Estate, Lekki phase 1, Lagos.

Nurudeen said that Akpan beat up his daughter with a belt for messing up his house. The police said that the victim died in her mother’s arms while being taken to the hospital.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 224 and is punishable under section 229 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015. (Revised).

The Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka did not take the plea of Akpan for want in the jurisdiction. Nwaka ordered that the case file be duplicated and a copy sent to the Lagos Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The case was however adjourned till February 23rd for DPP advice.
