Former first lady, Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi dies at 97

Former Nigeria’s first lady, Chief Mrs Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, is dead.

Victoria, wife of late Nigerian Military Head of State, Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi, died peacefully in the early hours of Monday, August 23. She would have clocked 98 on November 21, 2021.

Her husband was the Supreme Commander of the National Military Government for six months before being overthrown and assassinated on July 29, 1966, in the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup.

Victoria never remarried till she passed away this morning.

In other news, President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to exit the government as a failure at the end of his second term in office in 2023.

The President said this during a crucial closed-door meeting with service chiefs held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno, conveyed the President’s pledge to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting which lasted more than five hours.

“The President was briefed, he is quite happy that there’s been a tremendous success, especially with the advent of the new service chiefs and Inspector-General of Police. He also made it very clear that he’s not ready to exit government as a failure; he is not going to tolerate that.”
