18-year-old female boxer dies after being knocked out in a fight

An 18-year-old Mexican boxer identified as Jeanette Zacarias Zapata has died after a knockout left her in critical condition.

Zapata was knocked out in the fourth round against Marie Pier Houle at the GVM Gala International in Montreal last week.

She suffered a seizure in the ring after her opponent Marie Pier Houle gave her a left uppercut and a right hook. She was rushed to the hospital afterwards, but fight promoter Yvon Michel confirmed she had died on Thursday afternoon.

“It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata passed away this afternoon at 3:45 pm”, a statement released on Thursday, September 2 reads.

Houle, Zapara’s opponent has also taken to social media to express sadness over her tragic passing.

“Boxing carries a lot of risks and dangers,” she wrote on Instagram. “This is our job, our passion. Never, forever, intention to seriously hurt an opponent is part of my plans. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and spouse Jovanni Martinez. Thank you for respecting my desire not to comment more”. She wrote.
