ISWAP’s ability to launch rockets in Borno is disturbing, IGP says.

The ability of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to launch rockets into villages in Borno state has left Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police concerned.

ISWAP launched a series of rocket attacks in Maiduguri, the state capital, only hours before President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Borno.

IGP expresses concern over ISWAP’s ability to launch rockets in Borno.

The bombs that landed in several regions, including the settlements of Ngomari, Bulumkutu, Ajilari, and Ayafe, destroyed many homes.

Baba, responding to questions at the end of an emergency security council meeting presided over by Buhari at the presidential palace on Friday, said the terrorists’ ability to strike with rockets is concerning.

However, he said that the insurgents were unable to realize their goals.

“They are launching it in major towns, they are launching it in Maiduguri. It is a concern. And it has been seriously checkmated. There are efforts to continuously checkmate it,” Baba said.

“Yes, they have done it, but to a large extent they have not achieved what they intended to achieve because of the situation the security agencies, particularly the military, put in place.”

“Yes, it had been done before and even after,” Baba responded when asked if security authorities had been able to pinpoint the source of the missiles. Some of the people who had to plan and launch such missiles have been arrested.”

The police chief emphasized that security services are working to strengthen what they’re already doing “to ensure peace, law, and order during the holiday period and beyond.”

He reiterated Buhari’s order to security agencies that insurgents ought not to be spared.

“The marching orders are always the same. It has always been the same. There is no space, there is no tolerance to any threat to security,” he said.

“There is no sparing of any terrorists and there must be an intelligence gathering, there must be proactive prevention of crime and there must be checkmating of all those that are involved in criminal activities, whether it be terrorism, banditry or armed robbery or whatever and that is what we are trying to do to the best of our knowledge and ability.”
