#EmilianoSala: Southampton reacts after Fans mock Striker’s Death

Southampton has reacted after two fans were detained by police for mocking the tragic death of Cardiff City striker, Emiliano Sala.

Southampton played Cardiff City at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon in the Bluebirds’ first fixture since Sala’s body was formally identified from the plane wreckage at the bottom of the English Channel.

Two Saints fans were captured on video making ‘aeroplane gestures’ towards the visiting supporters on Saturday afternoon.

Stewards quickly ejected the pair and they were handed over to the police.

Southampton have now released a statement condemning such actions.

“Southampton Football Club can confirmthat two fans were detained and had their details taken by police during our match against Cardiff City on Saturday,” it read.

“The Club will continue to work with Hampshire Police to identify any individuals deemed to have made indecent gestures towards Cardiff supporters.

“Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St. Mary’s.

“The club will be taking an extremely firmstance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified.”
