Huawei Nigeria release Official Statement on US, Google BAN

Google BLOCKS Huawei from accessing Android

Huawei Nigeria has reacted to Google’s decision to stop licensing its Android operating system to the Chinese telecommunications firm in order to comply with a U.S. trade blacklist.

The United States President, Donald Trump, had issued an executive order which, though does not mention Huawei by name, aims to prohibit US companies from using any telecoms equipment manufactured by “foreign adversaries.”

US internet giant Google, whose Android mobile operating system powers most of the world’s smartphones, said this week it is cutting ties with Huawei to comply with the executive order.

The implication of the ‘ban’ are that:

  • Holders of current Huawei smartphones with Google apps will continue to be able to use and download app updates provided by Google
  • Huawei’s smartphone business will immediately lose access to updates to Google’s Android operating system.
  • Future versions of Huawei smartphones that run on Android will also lose access to popular services, including the Google Play Store and Gmail and YouTube apps.
  • Huawei will only be able to use the public version of Android and will not be able to get access to proprietary apps and services from Google.

Huawei is the unparalleled leader in 5G.

We are ready and willing to engage with the US government and come up with effective measures to ensure product security.

Restricting Huawei from doing business in the US will not make the US more secure or stronger; instead, this will only serve to limit the US to inferior yet more expensive alternatives, leaving the US lagging behind in 5G deployment, and eventually harming the interests of US companies and consumers.

In addition, unreasonable restrictions will infringe upon Huawei’s rights and raise other serious legal issues.

Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products covering those have been sold or still in stock globally.

We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.
