AFCON 2019: Femi Kuti to perform at Opening Ceremony

Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti (born 16 June 1962), popularly known as Femi Kuti will perform at the 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, opening ceremony in Egypt as confirmed by the organizing committee.

The four-time Grammy award nominee in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013, will be performing alongside two other musicians from Egypt and Ivory Coast – Hakim and Dobet Gnahore.

The announcement which confirmed that Femi Kuti will perform at the AFCON 2019 opening ceremony, was made on CAF’s official Twitter handle, the continent’s football body.

The Afrobeat singer will perform in English, while Hakim and Dobet Gnahore perform in Arabic and French respectively. The three international musicians will sing “Metgamaeen” (We Are Together) produced by Synergy together on stage in Cairo, Egypt.

The music legend who has performed in several other top sports events like the Glo-CAF Awards had also performed at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa at the Soccer City Stadium on June 11, 2010, in Johannesburg.

This is coming after the continent’s football authority had selected seven ex-players to be the face of this year’s tournament.

CAF has chosen Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Khatib, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba, Algeria’s Rabah Madjer, Nigeria’s Nwankwo Kanu and Senegal’s El-Hadji Diouf to be ambassadors for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
