#AcademyAwards: Victoria Kimani, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Dotun reacts to Genevieve’s ‘Lionheart’ Movie Disqualification from Oscars race
The Nigerian social media space has been buzzing after the country’s first-ever submission for Oscars consideration was disqualified from the race.
Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut movie was dropped from the Oscars consideration for being in the English language.
Lionheart is a Nigerian movie mainly done in English and Igbo language. It however appears that is not enough because the Academy requires a film to have “a predominantly non-English dialogue track” to be included in the Best International Feature Film category.
In reaction to the news, Genevieve explained that English is the lingua in Nigeria as it brings together people in a country of over 500 languages.
She added that Lionheart is very much a Nigerian movie even though it was predominantly done in English.
Other Nigerians on social media have also reacted to the news of the disqualification. While some people felt it was an unfair act, others felt the disqualification was deserved.
