Fire guts Idumota Market in Lagos, LASEMA confirms

Some shops were gutted by fire today at Ebute Ero market in Idumota, Lagos Island. The fire has now been brought under control by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency. The fire outbreak occurred at about 1:30pm. It reportedly razed five shops located in the two storey building known as Maola Shopping Mall, at Idumota. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the incident, saying: "Upon arrival of the Emergency Responders at the incident scene, it was revealed that a building, Maola Shopping Mall, was affected by the fire of an unknown origin. "A combined team of the LASEMA responders from Lagos Central Zone, the Lagos State Fire (Sari Iganmu), Federal Fire Service and the Nigeria Police Force was able to curtail the flames and only the top floor of the building (shop 36 and 35) was affected with no casualties. Responders have returned to base." Nosa Okunboru, Head Public Affair LASEMA added that "no injuries were sustained as a result of the outbreak, as the inferno has been put out, damped down, and affecting only the top floor of the building housing the 5 shops." He continued: "Operation was conducted by LASEMA Response Team from the Lagos Central Zone, Lagos State Fire Service (Sari Iganmu) and the Federal Fire Service with security support provided by members of the Nigerian Police Force."
