One person confirmed dead after a bridge collapsed at Oko-erin, Ilorin, Kwara State

One person reportedly lost their lives on Saturday, June 13, 2020, after a bridge collapsed in Oko Erin area of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Eye witness recounts that the vehicle conveying the deceased were on the bridge when it collapsed following a heavy downpour.

The driver, identified simply as Ajayi and his two passengers were said to have dived into the canal and died before they could be rescued.

Ajayi, who owns a boutique in Ilorin, and his wife welcomed a new baby just last month.

An eyewitness said a car carrying three passengers fell into the canal after the bridge collapsed.

“The bridge collapsed around 10pm on Saturday night because of heavy downfall. The driver was on the bridge when it tore apart and they fell into the canal. They died because they could not get help as people didn’t have means of rescuing them, we had to standby and expect the emergency team to come.” the eyewitness said

Confirming the incident, the Kwara state government via its Twitter handle, said efforts are being made to find two missing persons.

The state government says so far, one person has been confirmed dead in the incident.
