#TwitterBan: SERAP to sue FG over Suspension of Twitter in Nigeria

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has vowed to sue the Federal Government of Nigeria for suspending Twitter indefinitely in the country.

The Federal Government of Nigeria had earlier today announced the suspension of the Twitter operation in the most populous black nation.

The Nigerian Government led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari took to Twitter to announce the suspension via the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture Twitter account.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

This suspension did not go down well with SERAP as it perceived the Twitter ban as a threat to human rights. SERAP released the below statement in response to the ban;

BREAKING: We’re suing Nigerian authorities over their ILLEGAL indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

Nigerians have a right to freedom of expression and access to information including online, and we plan to fight to keep it that way.

@NigeriaGov, we’ll see you in court.
