Court orders FG to pay Nnamdi Kanu N1Bn as compensation, declares his arrest ‘illegal’

Following the appearance of the Supreme Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in court today, 19th January, the presiding judge has declared his arrest illegal and has ordered the Federal government to pay him a sum of one billion naira as compensation.

Justice Benson Anya of the Abia State High Court pronounced the aggressive invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s house in 2017 as unlawful and an infringement on his human rights.

Kanu had initially approached the Court while requesting a sum of N5 billion due to the invasion of his father’s house by the military on September 10, 2017.

In addition, the presiding judge while giving out his verdict today ruled that Kanu’s arrest and forceful repatriation to Nigeria in June 2021 was “illegal” under local and international laws.

The judge also ordered the Federal government to pay Kanu the sum of N1billion as compensation for the violation of his fundamental human rights.

The court also recommended a political solution to the agitation for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic; a course driven by the IPOB.
